Jennifer Oreta is currently an Assistant Professor of the Department of Political Science, and Director of the Ateneo Initiative for Southeast Asian Studies of the Ateneo de Manila University.
Under the administration of Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III, she was Assistant Secretary for Policy in the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process. As Asst. Secretary, she was tasked to mainstream the government’s peace policy and strategy with relevant government agencies, the AFP and PNP, and civilian stakeholders. She was also assigned to generate strategy papers on security issues, including matters relative to demobilization of combatants, community security management, and anti-terrorism.
She is currently a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Multi-Sector Governance Council, and the Multi-Sectoral Advisory Board of the Philippine Army. Both bodies provide assistance and guidance to the military establishment in its quest to modernize and professionalize the institution. She is also a member of the Board and concurrent Executive Director of the Human Security Advocates, a civil society group focused on security governance and community development.
At present, she is involved in research and projects on issues covering militancy and extremism, peacebuilding and community security, and security sector governance and reform, both with local and international NGOs.
She has extensive research background on security governance, political armed violence, community-based policing, and anti-terrorism.
